Wrangell Silvers are awesome!! There has been great fishing for almost a month now for us “hook and line” guys. My clients have had a great time trying to keep up with these Silver Bullets as they run, jump and run straight back to the outboards. Awesome!! I have been using the “Sledge Hammer” made by Mack’s Lures in blue and army truck. I have added a herring fillet as a trailer and for scent enhancement and it is the best thing going. These Stikine River Silvers are now reaching 15 pounds, hook nosed, and full of energy. My Fetha-Styx rods are managing these fish perfectly and even though they might be a little heavy, they play flawlessly and give my clients plenty of control. Fetha-Styx is the best around… Trolling around 2.5 knots and fishing as shallow as 15 feet, I am finding Silvers everywhere and taking lures very aggressively, even on the drop! Over the last month we have boated 97 Silvers onboard the “Timber Wolf” and there is more to come! These Silvers will continue to get bigger each week and hopefully provide us with some excitement before they head up the Stikine to spawn. Gotta love it! Wrangell Alaska!

Good fishing!

The King Salmon are still running in Wrangell, Alaska. John Yeager fills us in with the latest...

Well, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised to see such a good run of kings still here. Yesterday, we landed two real nice fish and lost two more on the surface. We had a triple header going with a nice king and two spunky silvers doing their thing! Yes, tangles were happening faster than I could tell my clients how to play these silver bullets. What a fun time though! So far, 73 kings have been landed onboard the “Timber Wolf” and now we are seeing some real nice silvers to Wrangell, which adds to the excitement. I have been very happy with my new Fetha Styx rods that Bill Boyce built and brought up with him and so far, we have really been putting them through their paces. I have switched to using the new Gamakatsu Big River hooks in 4/0 on my slip herring rigs and they are the best hook I have ever used. They deliver some very deep and hard hitting hook sets and believe me, these hooks will bite you! I have been injecting my herring with Pro-Cure herring oil and feel very confident that the extra scent has more than helped me land 54 Kings since June 18! Thanks to Kelly Morrison at Silver Horde, his KingFisher spoons are triggering bites when they are not taking my herring.

The 2011 season in Southeast Alaska is shaping up to be one of the best years in recent history for King salmon, reports Fetha Styx Pro Staff and veteran Waterfall Resort guide Kurt Ferse.

The 2011 season in Southeast Alaska is shaping up to be one of the best years in recent history for King salmon, reports Fetha Styx Pro Staff and veteran Waterfall Resort guide Kurt Ferse.

Fishing went from amazing in early June to downright ridiculous coinciding with the season opener on June 10th at Waterfall Resort on Prince of Wales Island. Nearly every spot fished has been holding incredible numbers of Kings, with 30+ King days nearly standard across the fleet. Just when it looked like it was starting to slow down in early July, another massive wave of Kings has pushed through, with some quality 30- and 40-pounders coming in daily.

“This is the kind of King fishing you thought you would never see again, and may never will. At times it has even been difficult to get your halibut because the Kings have been so thick from top to bottom,” reports Kurt.

The average size has been impressive as well, at close to 20lbs. These are fat, healthy fish that have been making for a lot of sore arms. The trophy Kings, (50+ pounders) have yet to arrive; however, excitement is building around the speculation that waves of big Kings will be behind this latest push of feeders, which could make this season one for the ages.

Silver fishing has been slow to date, however giant schools have been massing offshore and should be moving in any day.

There are a few remaining openings for the season, so you can still get in on this once-in-a-lifetime kind of fishing! Contact Waterfall Resort and make a request to fish with veteran guide Kurt Ferse and you will get to fish with some of Fetha Styx finest rods in some of the most productive fishing grounds in Alaska.

Stay tuned, as more updates from the 2011 season will be arriving shortly. Until then, tight lines to you all!

Excitement for the upcoming summer 2011 season has been building since the announcement in early April by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game that salmon returns are expected to be the biggest in several years. In Southeast Alaska, they have increased the daily limits to three kings for residents, and five per year for non-residents, up from three in 2008 and 2009.

Limits for silvers and pinks are still at six per day, but may be increased if the returns are as strong as expected. Anyway you look at it it’s going to be a fun and bountiful summer season for anglers in Alaska!

Fetha Styx and Kurt Ferse are teaming up again this season at the legendary Waterfall Resort. Guests aboard boat #16 will get to fish with some of Fetha Styx finest salmon and bottom rods in one of the richest fishing grounds in the world.

Bookings are strong but there are a few remaining spots available during some prime dates of the season. Folks interested (and if you are reading this, that’s you!) should check out the operation at Waterfall Resort and contact Kurt Ferse to make a guide request.

The 2010 summer season in Alaska was a memorable one to say the least for fans of Fetha Styx fishing rods and Waterfall Resort. Guests fishing with veteran guide Kurt Ferse got to test out the latest rods from Fetha Styx and were treated to some spectacular fishing. While testing a prototype rod for the new Homewater Alaska Series that was developed for the slow motor mooching that is popular in Southeast Alaska, guest Victor Dubois hooked into a monster king at the famous Pineapple Rock. These saltwater kings are known for their unyielding strength and endurance, and this one was no exception, taking nearly an hour to land. This was the first King of 2010 over 50lbs caught, so a proper celebration ensued on the docks with a champagne party on the docks for Victor and fellow resort guests and a Crown Royal party for the guides in the harbor.

For catching the largest Chinook of June, Victor won a $500 gift certificate to Cabelas and a free trip back to Waterfall Resort in 2011 as part of the King of Kings $100,000 Tournament.

Needless to say the new Fetha Styx rod has been tested and deemed ready for production by Kurt Ferse and a number of his happy clients! Look for it online and in stores this spring under the Homewater Salmon series as the 905-2C, 9ft 10-30lbs. 1-6oz., mod-fast, heavy.

Come fish with Kurt Ferse and Fetha Styx at Waterfall Resort in 2011 and catch your own monster king! Bookings are strong but there are a few remaining spots available during some prime dates of the season. Folks interested (and if you are reading this, that’s you!) should check out the operation at Waterfall Resort and contact Kurt Ferse to make a guide request. Check back this winter to see more updates on the 2010 season and get some exclusive looks at the upcoming summer season. Until later, tight lines to you all!

While fishing with Fetha Styx pro guide Kurt Ferse this past summer, Chris Lischewski hooked into this dandy king salmon that won him top prize, a brand new Ford F-150, in this season’s King of Kings Tournament at Waterfall Resort. Chris was fishing with the new Homewater series Alaska mooching rod that will be coming to the Fetha Styx lineup this spring.

Chris shows off his grand prize-winning king salmon.

“We came to Waterfall with big expectations – expectations that were enhanced by the 53-lb. king that was caught the day before we got there! We went out early and after changing a few fishing areas, I hooked my king. The water was relatively shallow and at first we weren’t sure if my hook was tangled in the kelp or if I had a King on the line. It didn’t take long to feel him pull hard, at which point I set the hook and the fight was on! It was a great fight for a 38 pounder and what a beautiful fish! While I was able to pull him up, Kurt, our captain, gets a lot of credit for maneuvering the boat to keep our king from escaping back into the kelp beds.”

Both Chris and his Fetha Styx Homewater mooching rod handled the fish perfectly, and the end result was the largest king caught that day at the resort. King of the Day winners are put into a hat at the end of the season and the winner is chosen at random. Chris was the lucky recipient and needless to say, he was pleasantly surprised.

“I got the call from Chuck at Waterfall telling me that I had won the truck at which point I was wondering which of my buddies was pulling my leg. What a great surprise to learn that I had really won!”

Chris gets the keys from Ken Grody at Carlsbad Ford of Los Angeles. In the spirit of the season, Chris traded in the truck for a new Edge.

Come fish with Kurt Ferse and Fetha Styx at Waterfall Resort in 2011 and catch your own truck!

Fetha Styx online team member Evan Davies is fishing up in Alaska for the week. He checked in after the first couple days on the water. Beautiful scenery, beautiful rainbow trout!

Day 1

Fishing the lower Kenai River today with Jeremy Anderson of Drift Away Guiding Service . . . beautiful sunny weather, but a tougher day on the water as the wind picked up, but as long as the sun is out all is fine with me. My custom 8 wt. Fetha Styx kicked some serious butt while hucking some heavier weight into the wind. Started out fishing several different color beads, but soon switched to fishing some custom-made flesh flies and things kicked into high gear.

Day 2

Not a bad start to the trip! We’ve lost quite a few fish, but everything I have caught has been at least 23 inches . . . the biggest being around 27-28 inches . It’s been frigid in the mornings, 24 degrees when we first hit the water, but the afternoons have been epic: mid-to-high 50′s, sunny and perfectly clear.
